Increasing traffic on your website

How to increase traffic on my website is a perennial question faced by almost all web developers and website owners. There are many resources on web which will ask you to do search engine optimization, refine your code, follow certain development practices and what not. Although all these are beneficial for your site as they make your website clean and faster which definitely makes people like your site, but what is the use of all this when no one is visiting your website at first.

Here I will not be bothering you much with best coding practices, SEO etc, instead I will tell you how to make use of the existing websites to make traffic come to your website and help you in improving your google search results. Let us begin by asking a few questions.

1) What is the most important aspect you look for in a website?

Appearance? No

URL? No

Attractive Pictures? No (unless this is what you are specifically looking for)

Flash Animations or Javascript functionality? No

The most important thing one looks for is the information i.e. the content. So lets us assume for a second that I am Mr.Search Engine. Since search engine’s job is to provide people with the most accurate results, so the most important parameter it would search for would be the content. Hence, one must keep on updating original content on his/her website frequently. The more frequent one is in putting new content the more frequent would be the visits by your dear friend, Mr. Search Engine.

2) When you surf the web, from which websites do you most frequently find links and go to another site (except search engines)?

Facebook, google groups, orkut, myspace, yahoo groups.

These are the most important tools one can have in the contemporary time. The extent to which Facebook can help one’s website in bringing traffic is so much that one can’t even imagine. Most of us have at least 100 friends on facebook and they in turn have atleast 100 friends each. Now its upto the person to harness this power of networking to bring the traffic. But again bringing traffic once can be done through this medium, to retain the traffic one must provide people with interesting and original content.

One must put his/her website’s links on google groups, myspace, yahoo groups etc. at relevant places. For eg. if your website has a blog about softwares then it makes sense to put that specific link onto a forum or group where software discussions are taking place. Google is growing its intelligence and putting your link on unrelated posts won’t serve you any good (it won’t do any harm either, except the wastage of your time to put your link on such a website).

3) If a person is a  renowned criminal and you give his reference to someone, what impression would that third person have of you?

You would be considered a criminal yourself, right!!!

So DO NOT put links of such malicious websites on your own website, even if such websites are offering you some price to put their links on yours. To check whether a site is a bad site or not, write www.nameOfWebsite.com or .org or .net whatever it is in the google search. If no results are found that can mean two things, either the website is not yet indexed by google or google has blacklisted the website. In both cases I would ask you to avoid posting link to such a website.

4) Google is pretty smart, do not try to befool it.

Do not try dark SEO practices like putting text of the background color just for the sake of coming up in search results. Google has powerful algorithm which can detect such practices.

5) Try to put a lot of relevant text on the main page of your website for better search results.

And finally I would again like to pin point the importance of content. Be original, be frequent and traffic would pour in.

KINDLY SHARE THE POST FOR BENEFIT OF ALL
